Cocaine, Congress, and the CIA

Today's world shows an alarming trend in one of it's industries: drugs. It's not legal (or safe), but it has people around the world doing desperate things to achieve their next high or dose. Investigation bureaus across our country are trying to stop the trafficking of all sorts of drugs: from meth, to cocaine, to marijuana, to LSDs, and even to common cigarettes and over the counter drugs. The drug abuse statistics of America today are disturbingly high, which leads our government to make the statement that something should be done. But what?

The idea of legalizing drugs has been explored a bit. At first, it seems like a tolerable idea. Perhaps, legalizing drugs would mean that there would be fewer illegal activities and crimes taking place across the US. It seems like an alright idea, if you consider the fact that in the western states, more than half of all people in prison are there because of drugs.

However, exploring the consequences prove to outweigh the benefits in every way. Legalizing drugs in America would mean that while our country is legal, others are not. I personally think that if this happened, drug cartels from countries such as Mexico and Cuba would be turning to our country for "legal" supplies to manufacture whatever drug they were trying to make money off of. America's black market would suddenly become a major player in today's world industries.

Whatever happens over the legality of drugs, they will always remain a concern and a prominent figure in the destruction of healthy people. Our only hope is that, with time, rehabilitation systems can try to lessen the number of individuals whose lives have been shattered by drugs.
