Conflict vs. Compromise

Today in schools, there appears to be a great trend in conflict prevention and bullying awareness and solution methods. With the creation of programs such as HALT!, No Bully, Conflict Resolution, and many others, the message is clear: there appears to be a trend in conflicts and bullying programs in today's society.

However, there are some standard conflict resolution methods that have been in existence for long periods of time. They have been used repeatedly and have been shown to work on multiple occasions. I feel that one of the most successful methods is to consult a 3rd party. Many teens today will admit that they feel "shy" or "awkward" approaching the person that they have a problem with. Consulting somebody else to gain another opinion (for both sides of the conflict) can provide another valuable, open-minded view, without having to make direct contact with the person involved in the problem.

Although all conflict prevention methods have their advantages and disadvantages, gaining an outsider's opinion has proven to be effective in many situations. While it may not work for more personal conflicts, it is still an ideal plan for business and educational problems that can occur.
